“I need help,” the woman said tearfully. Victoria held a box of tissues out to her.
“How may I help you?” she asked.
“As you can see, I’m a wreck,” the woman replied. “I need to see the doctor right this second. My seventeen-year-old just told me she’s marrying her boyfriend. I know my husband will go nuts when he finds out. Honestly, I feel like running away. I may need medication to get through this.”
Victoria knew her by name. Jamie Dunbar was a current patient. She had been seeing Dr. Jacobs for the past two years.
“The doctor is in with a patient right now Ms. Dunbar. The best I can do is to squeeze you in tomorrow at…”
Jamie cut her off before she could finish. “I have to work a double tomorrow. What kind of person are you to judge me, Ms. Snead?”
Victoria pushed her anger away, although it was difficult. “I’m a person that doesn’t try to change what I can’t control. I’m a person who is trying her best to help.”
“Easy for you to say,” Jamie said, still dabbing her eyes.
Victoria assured Jamie that she would take down a detailed message. She seemed to have calmed down and they parted on good terms. Still, the patient left her feeling defeated. Although she wasn’t superstitious, Victoria wondered if there was a full moon.
